There is only one word to describe Gelato at Chalet View Lodge and that is. . . . Delicious!!! Gelato is the Italian word for ice cream made with milk, cream, sugar and flavoring such as fresh fruit and nut purees. It is also defined as soft ice cream which contains little or no air, which also means more bang for your buck.

Ashley, one of our amazing staff members, makes it her goal to make the best gelato our guests have ever had. Some might say she is competing with the Italians, yet for now she is making the Best Gelato in Plumas County! New mouth watering flavors are being created weekly with that soft, smooth, creamy texture of Gelato that hits the spot any time a day! Come and experience Ashley’s creations, such as Triple Chocolate Brownie, Chai Tea, Maple Pecan, and Banana Rum just to name a few. Spring Hiking

Looking to stretch your legs and shake off the winter?! Spring hiking is some of the best, with cool weather, raging rivers, and trails all to yourself. If your not afraid of trekking through a few snow mounds or hopping over water in places it doesn’t normally belong, then the woods are all yours! In the Lakes Basin and surrounding areas, a little more of every trail, exposes itself everyday, with more access daily! Some of Chalet View Lodge staff picks during the Spring thaw are:

The Graeagle Creek Trail- Follow this beautiful 2 mile trail (one way) along the raging Graeagle Creek and end at Gray Eagle Lodge or continue to. . . .
Lilly Lake- A peaceful 1.5 mile trail (one-way) that guides you to Lily Lake, a picturesque mountain lake.
Smith Lake- This gorgeous high altitude lake awaits you at the end of a 1.5 mile trail (one way)
Forest Loop near Greaeagle- A 2 mile loop, a perfect stroll though the woods.
Lake Davis- All of Lake Davis is defrosted, the fish are biting, and the hike around the lake is ideal, a 6 mile loop.
Spanish Creek Trail- Going toward Quincy you will find this hike nestled in the woods, taking you along Spanish Creek for 5 miles round trip, also a favorite among mountain bikers.
Frazier Falls- This amazing waterfall is worth every footstep on this 1 mile trail out and back. This handicap accessible trail leads you through granite walls and expansive views of massive canyons, to a waterfall that comes from Gold Lake with an impressive 170 foot drop to amaze all who visit!

Spring Events in Plumas County

Spring has arrived in Plumas County with green grass and tulips gracing the scene every where you look. The mountains are slowly uncovering their trails and the creek beds and rivers are enjoying the extra rush of water. As with spring, Graeagle prepares for the flurry of Events that start to roll into town with eager anticipation. Embrace the awakening of spring in Plumas County and plan to attend one of these great events, which is always sure to be fun for the whole family.

Calendar of Events for April and May:

April 13- Taste of Plumas: Plumas County Fairgrounds in Quincy from 5:30pm to 8pm. Take a tour of many of the best culinary establishments and great wines available in Plumas County in a single location. The event also features a silent auction. Tickets are $40, which includes a souvenir wine glass. For more information, call 530-283-3402.
April 27- Western Pacific Railroad Museum Opens! This excellent train museum opens its doors to visitors, 10am to 5pm Daily. Located at 700 Western Pacific Way, Portola. For more information, call 530-832-4131.
May 4- Spanish Creek Bird Walk. Sponsored by the Plumas Audubon Society, Led by David Arsenault and Tony Hill. Gansner Park, Quincy, 7:30am. For more information, call 530-283-3052.
May 18- Graeagle Fishing Derby. Sponsored and Stocked by the Feather River Trout Unlimited, the Greaeagle Junior Fishing Derby will interest all anglers of all ages to try their skill at catching fish in the Graeagle Mill Pond.
May 19- Dixieland Jazz Concert. The Feather River Dixieland Jazz Society will perform a concert at the Graeagle Picnic Grounds form 1 to 5pm. Jazz enthusiasts will enjoy the sounds of Dixieland Jazz at its finest.
May 25- On Memorial Day weekend only, the Shop Hop will kickoff and shoppers will be given a passport to gather stamps throughout the merchant establishments. Fill up the passport, and you could win a chance for a great prize.
May 25-26- Spring Craft Fair at the Graeagle Firehall from 10am until 4pm. Vendor booths full of crafty items, a fun family event! Free to the public. For more information, call 530-832-1184.

Calpine Lookout Tower

Imagine being surrounded by 360 degrees of unobstructed views all day and night inside a cozy fire lookout tower. The Calpine lookout tower, just outside the community of Calpine has a long history dating back to 1934, when it was first built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The lookout remained active until 1975, used to spot forest fires, and is now available for rent for year round recreation. In the summer, the tower is easily accessible by foot, yet in winter, access is gained by ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile. The Lookout serves as a basecamp for many recreational activities, yet reading, card playing, hiking, and stargazing may be the most popular. The day starts with a sunrise over Sardine Peak, fresh air and silence surround you all day with a view of the areas best peaks and valleys, then ends perfectly with a sunset over Haskell Peak. The days don’t get much better than that! In our busy lives of today, escape to disconnect with distractions and reconnect with life, getting back to the basics. This is a place where marriage proposals have been made, relationships renewed and a sense of self refreshed. The Calpine Lookout tower is run by the Sierraville Ranger District and rented through the National Recreation Service. Keep in mind you don’t have to rent this beauty to enjoy it, as its just an easy day hike to enjoy this great historical Landmark. To say the least you cant beat the views!!

A Walk in the Woods

Graeagle truly is “the gift of a lifetime.” A simple walk in the woods is never just ordinary, rather each and every time a new adventure of sight, sound and spirit. The excitement of a glimpse of your favorite bird, can guide your path into a new direction of exploration, as you search the Earth and Sky for the colored feathers. Stellar jays squawk at you with every step and chickadees sing their way from limb to limb. Deer, Coyote, Rabbit, Squirrel, Raccoon, Skunk, tracks of all kinds in quantity surround every footstep. Before you know it, you decide to follow a deer track and begin another journey along an age-old deer trail, wondering where this new possibility might take you. Time passes and hours of unlimited breathtaking wild beauty lead you to the Feather River, where a gaggle of geese awaits you. As you sit along the rivers edge, a bald eagle swoops by, the big personality of geese makes you laugh, and you reflect on another walk in the woods. All is connected, your senses renewed and another walk awaits for you again tomorrow. Where will your footsteps lead you?

Snowball 2013

The Party comes to Plumas County!! The much anticipated 20th Annual Johnny Redstreake Snowball is back. The whole town is abuzz with the makings of what some declare “The best party all year!” On March 2nd, Nakoma Golf Resort, home of the unique architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, will welcome you into a space deemed unforgettable. Housed inside the inspirational walls, delicious food is prepared by the finest Plumas County Chefs, mouth-watering local Brew from the Brewing Lair, and Eureka Peak Brewing Company, and a rocking band named Cool Black Kettle from South Lake Tahoe. In between laughing, dancing, and feasting, live and silent auctions can be found, as well as a raffle of fabulous finds, all with a cause to raise funds for the Johnsville Historic Ski Bowl. The whole reason the party comes together is to reestablish the vitality of this unique Ski Bowl , which will in turn continue to bring life to all of Plumas County year round. The Johnsville Historic Ski Bowl will provide a place of winter recreation for everyone to enjoy, equipped with a ski lift and sledding hill. All proceeds go towards the installation of the chairlift, generously donated by Squaw Valley, and facility improvements. The Snowball is a dedicated party, celebrating the history of our mountain and the future it aspires to be. We look forward to sharing the evening with you and this one of a kind event worth talking about.!

Nothing is more satisfying than being a part of someones Big Wedding Day and having them leave with memories that bring smiles every time they think about it. Here at Chalet View, we pride ourselves on making your day uniquely special, as if it were our own. So when we received the most heartwarming testimonial letter of thanks this week from one of our past brides, we all smiled with the memories!

“If you are trying to plan the perfect mountain wedding, look no further than the Chalet View Lodge. The impeccably kept grounds at the Chalet View allowed us to play games, say our vows in a beautiful ceremony, enjoy an amazing outdoor sunset dinner complete with chandeliers and a provided rocking dance floor under the stars. Accommodating and cheerful, the staff at the Chalet View worked incredibly hard to make our wedding happen. Our guests raved about the natural beauty of the location, the great rooms and service and the delicious food on site. We loved how easy and accessible the staff was to answer our many questions and requests. It was quite an amazing morning to behold . The air was crisp with freshness, the skies soared blue in all directions, and all the trees were perfectly dusted with snow. Overnight, a few inches of fresh snow fell over the landscape making it hard to resist a day of play. The hard part would be trying to decide which adventure to partake in. . . . . . .

Snowmobile out to Lake Davis or up to Smith Peak Lookout?. . . Maybe try my luck at ice fishing?. . . Cross-country ski at Plumas Eureka State Park on the freshly groomed trails?. . . Enjoy a glass of smooth red wine at Indian Peak Vineyard tasting room or maybe a delicious refreshing beer at The Brewing Lair?. . . Sled at the Johnsville Historic Ski Bowl?. . . Snowshoe around the Mill Pond or up to the Mills Peak Trail?. . . Enjoy a rejuvenation soak at the Sierra Hot Springs admiring all the natural beauty that surrounds us?

Historic Longboard Races are Here

The Historic Longboard Races are here!!! On January 20th, get ready to witness a tradition on the Plumas Eureka Ski Bowl in Johnsville, as skiers race down the hill on longboards, to the finish line. Participants dress in miner fashion to pay tribute to the history of the mountain’s mines, while strapping on 12-14 foot long skis, in an attempt to be the fastest. Skill and speed determine the winner, as spectators cheer them on as part of the tradition that echoes into the mountain. Join us in this historic event and be part of the effort to raise funds to restore the Johnsville Ski Hill, which aims to install a ski lift and establish tubing for winter recreation to enjoy in plumas county. May the Longboards be with you!! See you at the races!!
